The first phase of the Digital Evidence Management System starts today in Dublin today.
Limerick and Waterford will be added to the list of counties where gardai will use them.
The Taoiseach says he's sick of Gardaí being the only people at protests without a camera.
The Irish Times reports that the cameras can be used promptly to gather evidence to prosecute suspects, including far-right instigators at protests and similar events.
The cameras will be placed on the jackets of the Garda uniform and will be turned on and off manually.
Officers won't have to tell members of the public when they're in use, but will be encouraged to do so.
Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee says this is "an absolute priority" to ensure that "An Garda Síochána have the tools, technology and the equipment to keep themselves safe."
