A 49 year old woman has admitted murdering her two children in Westmeath.

Lynn Eager, of Winetown in Rathowen, Co. Westmeath, was due to stand trial early next year, but was today handed a life sentence after pleading guilty to the murders.

Thelma Dennany was five years old and her brother Michael was only two, when their mother set their car on fire in Multyfarnham on September 9th  last year.

The Central Criminal court heard that the children’s mother was in the passenger seat and was pulled to safety by a passer-by and suffered only “minimal burns”.

After she was sentenced, Garda Martina Walsh read out a statement on behalf of the families:

“Thelma and Michael were happy, fun, loving children overflowing with love and mischief. Had they’ve grown up they might have changed the world because they changed ours. Their absence has cast a shadow on our lives, that shadow falls testament to the brightness of their light. We’re utterly lost without them.”
