A visit to Rossmore Forest Park is a must - recently named the most popular forest park in the country; Lough Muckno in Castleblayney, meanwhile, is a hub for water sports enthusiasts, with kayaking, SUP and sailing offered by Castleblayney Outdoor Adventure.
The far north of the county offers a change of scenery and pace. The upland bogs of Sliabh Beagh is a haven for flora and fauna and offers hiking and biking trails to suit all levels of fitness. Check out the recently revamped Monaghan Town Greenway, a 4.2km linear route which traverses Monaghan Town and brings you directly out to Rossmore Forest Park.
Award-winning heritage attractions in Monaghan include the Patrick Kavanagh Centre and Trail in the beautiful village of Inniskeen; Carrickmacross Lace, home of the ‘royal lace’, a technique used in the wedding dresses of royalty, including Queen Victoria, Princess Diana and Kate Middleton; and Carrickmacross Workhouse, where an evocative guided tour brings an added dimension to a harrowing period of Irish history.
The monastic town of Clones is another must-see, with its interactive heritage trail covering sites including the ‘Wee Abbey’ and 10th Century Round Tower. The village of Glaslough is another gem, famed for its artisan shops and pubs and fabulous floral displays.
