A new survey says the majority of Irish people are willing to swap private car use for sustainable travel.

The study says 77 per cent of those interviewed believe that walking, cycling and using public transport is more important than driving, for the benefit of the environment.

Titled Your Journey Counts, this survey was carried out by Red C for the Department of Transport .

It found that 60 per cent of people are willing to personally make changes to how they travel.

It says that 73 per cent of car drivers and passengers would swap the car for walking, cycling and public transport for short journeys of less than 2 kilometres, most of which are currently made by private car.

The survey says 67 per cent are likely to cut back on their car use further as confidence in public transport improves.

The Department says that since the Government reduced fares in May 2022 by 20 per cent for all and by 50 per cent for young people, an additional 240,000 young people are benefiting from public transport every day.
