An addiction specialist says more and more people are being referred for phone and Internet addiction.

A survey by Motorola has found 84% have captured memorable events on their phone, but almost one in three wished they had lived more in the moment.

The poll of 2,000 people found taking pictures of beauty spots and landmarks is the most common reason people reach for their mobile.

Taking pictures of food and a child's first day of school are among the top reasons people take out their phones.

But Prof. Colin O'Gara, Head of Addiction Services at St John of God Hospital, says although most people could benefit from reducing their screen time, some people are severely impacted by a phone addiction:

"Since 2010/2011 there is no question in my mind that for most people we're on that spectrum somewhere, we have increased our device usage, there's no question about that."

He continued, "And I think most people would say 'yeah I should probably cut down' but for some people at the end of that spectrum, it's incredibly harmful and on the clinical frontline we're starting to see more and more being referred solely for that difficulty."
