Defeats the purpose then if we keep bringing our wash home...
Let's face it - it's probably likely that the age people are properly moving out of their family home is rising.
Maybe your parents got married, had a kid and bought a house by the age of 27.
But that's not realistic anymore, is it?
Between rent taking all our money, and the lack of affordable housing, our parents have to wait that little bit longer for us to fully fly the nest.
Or maybe they're delighted they get you for a little longer.
Either way, we'd imagine there are some things your parents are looking forward to when that big moving out day comes.
And the top one does not surprise us AT ALL.
A survey was done to find out what parents most look forward to, and having less clothes to wash took the top spot.
That was followed by a reduction in how much the weekly shop will cost.
And then in number three was the comfort of knowing the house would stay as tidy as they left it.
The poll involved 1,000 parents aged over 45 who have had at least one child leave home.
SWNS Digital reports it found 65 per cent were looking forward to the day their kids finally left.
It also emerged 38 per cent turned their children’s former rooms into something else, with a guest bedroom the top choice for 45 per cent of those.
Here's the top 25 things parents look forward to once their kids move out:
- Less washing
- Food bills going down
- Knowing the house will be as tidy as you left it
- Energy bills going down
- Not having to clean up after them
- Only cooking for two, or one
- Being more spontaneous in general
- Not having to go around the house collecting cups, mugs and plates
- Being able to eat whatever you want for dinner
- Having disposable income
- Turning bedrooms into other spaces
- Not being woken up in the middle of the night when they get home
- Being able to take more holidays
- Not having to pick them up from places
- Going on exotic holidays – without the kids
- Throwing out clutter
- Not having to queue for the shower
- Not having to spend weekends dropping them off at activities
- Being able to have a lie in
- Going out to nice restaurants
- Doing home renovations
- Avoiding heating wars
- Being able to have ‘nice things’ again
- Landscape the garden
- Getting all their stuff out of the garage
The poll was commissioned by Key Later Life Finance and carried out by OnePoll.
