More than 7 in 10 staff use WhatsApp for work-related communications.

Employers are being warned to set boundaries for work-related WhatsApp groups.

A new survey shows the feeling of being 'permanently on call' has led to increased frustrations among employees - with 58 percent feeling under pressure to answer messages, outside of work hours.

The study conducted by Exel Recruitment found more than half fear being judged by their peers if they didn't, and a further 32 percent are concerned they'd get in trouble at work.

Over 82 percent of people in Ireland were using WhatsApp as a method of communication last year - but the feeling of being permanently on call has led to increased frustrations among employees.

Shane McLave, Managing Director at Excel Recruitment says more than a quarter of staff said it was one of the reasons they'd previously left a job.

McLave says, "It's really important that we have boundaries, I think every company should have a WhatsApp policy. It needs to be very clear and well defined, and I think people need to be able to opt in or opt out or opt to take a break and their shouldn't be any negative comeback on people in that case."
