Animal welfare campaigns will be rejoicing today as a law in the UK is being proposed which would force anyone buying or adopting a dog under six months old to deal directly with the breeder or a re-homing centre.

The new rules which will come into effect on April 6th next year  would enforce safe standards in the buying and selling of puppys and require animals to be born and reared in a safe environment, and be sold from their place of birth.

The Lucy Law

The rules which are being dubbed 'The Lucy Law',  will apply to England, are hoping to deter smugglers who take advantage of the Pet Travel scheme to smuggle animals into the UK.

The Lucy Law is named after Lucy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who died in 2017 after being poorly treated on a puppy farm.
