New research has been carried out by the National Kidney Foundation.

Many of us need our cup of coffee (or three) when we get up in the morning.

It gives us a boost, whether its scientific or psychological, we love that bit of caffeine.

But, wouldn't it be even better if that cup of coffee had more health benefits than just waking you up?

Well, it turns out, it just might.

New research has been carried out by the National Kidney Foundation in relation to kidney stones.

The research explores the fact that coffee and caffeine consumption have been associated with a lower risk of kidney stones in observational studies.

So they conducted a "Mendelian randomization study" to assess why this is.

And what was the conclusion?

"Using genetic data, this study provides evidence that higher coffee and caffeine consumption may cause a reduction in kidney stones."

There was a lot of sciency talk in the study but basically it suggests that coffee can reduce the risk of kidney stones.

The study was published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases which you can find here.

So if you ever needed more reason to have your daily coffee, there you go!

It's almost as good as that time we found out that coffee could help fight covid.
