Dogs Trust has recorded a 33 per cent increase in dogs being surrendered since Christmas.

The pet charity says they're finding it difficult to rehome medium to large-size breeds in particular.

394 requests were made from Christmas Day to the end of January by owners.

Dogs Trust says most dogs in their rehoming centre require extra care due to the effects of the pandemic.

The pet charity is providing behavioural support to unwanted pets from lockdown.

Dogs Trust Communications Manager, Corina Fitzsimons, says many of the requests are from people in rented accommodation:

"There are people who seek to surrender a dog due to extenuating  circumstances and one thing we've see quite a lot recently is the volume of people contacting us because the rental accommodation they are living in is being sold and they're really struggling to find pet friendly accommodation and those people have literally no where to go with their dogs."
