Gender reveal parties are a very recent phenomenon, nowadays its common for an expecting couple to invite a few friends and family around let them know if they're expecting a boy or a girl.
However recently gender reveal parties have been hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons...
Including a car which burst into flames at one, along with the fact that a lot of people are now saying babies are being pigeon holed with an identity before they've even been born.
Now, the woman credited with inventing the gender reveal party in 2008 says she regrets it.
In an interview with The Guardian, Jenna Karvunidis said that after a series of miscarriages, getting to the point of being able to know if it's a boy or girl felt like a "milestone" that should be celebrated with a pink cake.
But the parties of today are a different entity entirely, she believes: "Let's saddle this kid with a whole identity," she said.
''I started to realise that nonbinary people and trans people were feeling affected by this, and I started to feel bad that I had released something bad into the world," Karvunidis said.
In an Instagram post, she wrote: "Assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what's between their legs."
Karvunidis says her daughter, now 10, is informing her mother about gender and societal expectations. She also doesn't want parents to think she's being preachy.
"If you enjoy having a party, there’s no stopping that. Parents get enough flak as it is, and I’m not trying to stop anyone from having a good time. But maybe not setting up such an expectation, that’s all."
Do you agree? Or are gender reveal parties just a harmless bit of fun?
