Creators of Barbie 'Mattell' have designed their newest Barbie in the image of actress Laverne Cox.

The toy company worked with Laverne Cox to create the popular doll in the likeness of a transgender woman.

The doll wears a deep oxblood red tulle gown, heeled boots, a sparkling silver metallic bodysuit and silver earrings.

Cox is a Emmy nominated actor most known for her role in Orange is the New Black.

Her role made her the first trans woman of colour to have a leading role in a scripted TV show.

The LGBTQ activist said "It's been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my own doll."

"I can't wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection."

The activist and actor showed off the new doll days before she turns 50 on Sunday.

“What excites me most about her being out in the world is that trans young people can see her and maybe get to purchase her and play with her.

And know that there’s a Barbie made by Mattel, for the first time, in the likeness of a trans person,” she said.

Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, said in a statement.:

"We are proud to highlight the importance of inclusion and acceptance at every age and to recognize Laverne’s significant impact on culture with a Tribute Collection Barbie."

Unfortunately the doll is currently available in the US but we hope it will make it across the pond soon.
