Leo Varadkar issued the warning following on from the US experience
There's concern a drug 50 times stronger than heroin could reach our shores.
The Taoiseach says the country must be prepared for the arrival of illegal supplies of Fentanyl, with reports that gangs are trying to bring it here.
The Irish Examiner says Leo Varadkar issued the warning, following on from the US experience, where the drug has had a devastating impact on the street.
Addiction specialist Dr Garrett McGovern says Fentanyl could cause havoc:
"It's a bit unprecedented for Ireland in many ways. I mean we've had heroine epidemics and we have a crack cocaine problem in this country, effecting marginalised communities but this is something completely different."
He continued, "I think treatment services are going to be absolutely overwhelmed if that drug replaces heroine, there's going to be a lot more deaths associated with it."
