The number of dogs being surrendered since Christmas has been described as 'astonishing'.
Dogs Trust says it had 394 surrender requests between Christmas and the end of January.
Since Christmas, we've received 394 requests to surrender a dog into our care. That’s a 33% increase on this time last year. With less applications for bigger dogs & resources stretched, the issue is at an all-time high. Learn more ? https://t.co/OVHtetK51a#ADogIsForLife pic.twitter.com/DrCuxmK0lz

It's also noted an increase in surrender requests from people in rented accommodation who say their landlords won't let them keep pets.
Ciara Murran from Dogs Trust Ireland says it's a growing problem for dog owners:
"We've seen an eighty percent increase over the past three years of people looking to give up their dog purely down to accommodation which is absolutely devastating obviously for the owner."
"We've listed it as one of the top three reasons that people give for having top surrender their dog."
