''Protect yourself do not abbreviate 2020''.

Something most of us do automatically is chop off the first two numbers of the year when we're writing the date down on a form or document.

For today a person could write 3/1/20 for example.

But legal experts are warning against doing that in the year 2020, especially when it comes to the signing of legal and financial documents.

Why? Because the date could be easily changed and used against you, reports CBS Sacramento.

For the entirety of this year, experts say everyone should write, for example, the date as 23/7/2020. Because if you write 23/7/20, anyone could easily add a couple of digits to make it look like another year in the past or a year in the future, for example, 23/3/2015 or 23/3/2022.

The East Millinocket Police Department in Maine took to it's Facebook page to warn people about not abbreviating the date.

''This is very sound advice and should be considered when signing any legal or professional document'', the police department wrote.

''It could potentially save you some trouble down the road''.
