If you're trying to count calories you're being advised to go grocery shopping alone.

New research has found that couples who do the weekly food shop together buy more junk food and fast food.

Researchers in Germany found that couples usually act as 'accomplices' who give each other permission to buy biscuits and chocolate

Rather than 'minders' who steer each other away from unhealthy products.

The survey was conducted with 75 couples who were sent to shop together, and individually at a Christmas market.

When shopping alone they opted for an average of 8 'treats' compared with 20 when they shopped together.
