It's in a bid to find a cure.

Scientists at the Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Centre, in Whitechapel, London, are looking for healthy people to be intentionally infected with the COVID-19 virus.

Volunteers could be paid £3,500 (€4,000) to be infected with a form of the contagious coronavirus as scientists work to create a vaccine.

Metro reports that batches of 24 healthy people will be infected with the 0C43 and 229E strains of the virus.

The two strains are both common, but much less serious, types of coronavirus, and are thought to cause mild respiratory symptoms that are not as a severe as Covid-19, according to The Daily Star.

Experts are hopeful that the trials could be vital in putting an end to the virus which has so-far killed more than 3,500 people worldwide.

During the study, participants will spend two weeks in isolation, eat a restricted diet and will not be able to exercise or have physical contact with other people.

During that time they'll be closely monitored with nasal swabs and blood tests, while medical staff in protective clothing will collect any dirty tissues they infect.

Hvivo, the company which owns the laboratory, needs approval from the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency before the testing starts.

So far 33 people are infected with the coronavirus on the island of Ireland.

Anyone wishing to partake in Hvivo’s study can fill out a form at FluCamp.com.
