It could mean those annoying queues are a thing of the past.

Queuing at the airport gate could soon be a thing of the past if airlines introduce new boarding methods.

Gatwick has been trialing a system where window seat passengers get on first followed by middle and aisle seats.

The airport claims that the new pattern reduces boarding times by 10 per cent which in turn prevents the number of delayed flights.

Gatwick believes it is possible to reduce the time it takes to board a typical short-haul flight by between three and 14 minutes.

The two-month pilot is being carried out in the North Terminal on Airbus A320 aircraft with six seats across.

Gatwick's head of enabling technologies and digital innovation Abhi Chacko said: "We want to explore whether boarding by seat number will avoid queues in the gate room and when boarding the aircraft".

"Early indications are that this new technique has the potential to reduce the overall boarding time," Abhi Chacko said.

"By communicating to passengers better and boarding passengers by seat number, we also expect to make the whole boarding experience more relaxing and, potentially, prevent large numbers of passenger rushing forward at any stage."

Newstalk asked people in Dublin if they queued at the gate or waited for everyone to board:

''I usually just sit and wait until everyone's boarded and then I line up.''

''I travel a lot by myself and I'm a small person so I like to get on the plane first otherwise I'm a bit overwhelmed.''

''I wait, what's the rush I guess...''
