Bearded men carry more germs than dogs according to a new study.

New research looked at the levels of bacteria in 18 men’s facial hair and the levels in 30 dogs from different breeds.

"The researchers found a significantly higher bacterial load in specimens taken from the men’s beards compared with the dogs’ fur," said Professor Andreas Gutzeit, of Switzerland’s Hirslanden Clinic told Metro

The study took place to find out whether there was a risk of humans picking up a disease from dogs if they used the same MRI scanner as a vet.

The research found that all the men had high microbial counts and seven of them had bacteria that was hazardous to human health. However, only 23 of the dogs had high microbial counts.

The MRI scanners were disinfected afterwards and researchers found higher levels of bugs on the scanners after the men had used it.
