Lisbon in Portugal was a close runner up
Athens has been named the cheapest city break in Europe.
A UK Post Office survey found prices in the Greek capital have fallen by 15% since last year.
They looked at costs for visitors in 20 popular areas across the continent, including meals, accommodation and local transport.
The total bill for all these came to €240 compared to €252 in runners-up Lisbon.
Both cities were ahead of destinations renowned for low prices such as Krakow in Poland (€253), Riga in Latvia (€254) and Budapest in Hungary (€255).
Low prices in Athens include:
- €45 for an evening meal for two with wine
- €102 for two nights’ accommodation in a three-star hotel
- And €9 for a 48-hour public transport pass
The study found Dublin was more than twice expensive - coming in at €503
