'Any liquids'?
The most stressful experience of any airport (unless you're running late) is getting through security...
It's always extremely frustrating when your perfectly packed bag has to be trifled through by airport security in order to find that little tube of toothpaste you forgot to remove.
But those days could soon be in the past!
Thanks to a new enhanced airport security scanner that would mean passengers will no longer have to remove liquids and laptops from their bags when passing through security.
The computed tomography (CT) security equipment shows a 3D image of the contents of passengers’ hand luggage. And London Heathrow Airport has announced plans to install the new £50m technology by 2022.
The move will eliminate the need for travellers to put their liquids in sealed plastic bags, reducing the amount of plastic used at the airport.
It's hoped the new scanners will make the security process more robust and efficient, speeding up the experience to “transform the journey through the airport”.
“This cutting-edge kit will not only keep the airport safe with the latest technology, but will mean that our future passengers can keep their focus on getting on with their journeys and less time preparing for security screening,” said Heathrow chief operations officer, Chris Garton.
The scanners are already in use at several US airports, including Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport and Chicago’s O’Hare.
