Parents whose adult children are still living at home are being advised to ask for a contribution to the household.

A recent EU report found Ireland has one of the highest proportions of young adults living with their parents.

The covid pandemic, coupled with high rents and a shortage of housing, has led many 20 and 30 something's to return to the nest, often for free.

Irish Times Columnist and mother of seven, Jen Hogan, says those earning a wage should be paying towards household costs:

"Some people are finding the cost of living crisis at the moment really hard. "

"And the idea that an adult at home would be working and not contributing that is kind of absurd."

"I don't think it should come down to that. I think it's good training and good practice and if you are working and you're living at home and you're using the electricity and the gas and doing all the things you might not do if you're paying for it yourself, it's good training for living independently."
