If you like a bit of red sauce with your chips, it looks like you could be in for some hardship.

Tomato ketchup could soon become a rare commodity on our kitchen tables.

Climate change is threatening to halve the global tomato harvest this century.

Surging temperatures worldwide mean crops are being put under increasing pressure, with a team from Aarhus University in Denmark working to create a mathematical model to test how different climate change scenarios would affect the growth of plants.

The so-called 'processing tomatoes' used in the manufacture of the sauce are grown in California, Italy and China, areas all at risk from global warming.
