We've been hearing lots about the negative effects of plastic straws on the environment, and a Mayo town will be the first in Ireland to fully eradicate their usage in pubs.
Research has shown that in the US alone, 500 million plastic straws are used every day - it's worth noting that these take 200 years to break down.
A report produced in 2016 by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation also predicts that if plastic consumption continues at its current rate, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by the year 2050, which won't be long coming around.
Westport aims to be the first town to eradicate their usage, with the initiatie coming from the Westport Tidy Towns committee as part of it's entry to this years national competition.
Ireland's (worryingly) the top producer of plastic waste in the EU.
The committee is confident that all vinters in the town will get behind the intitiative.
