Omg Lol. Srs?
For those of us old enough to remember the good ol' days of MSN Messenger and MySpace, abbreviations like BRB (Be Right Back), G2G (Got To Go), and the everlasting LOL (Laugh Out Loud) seem commonplace.
But use those terms around someone born after the year 1998 and you'll come across as beyond ancient.
This is the fast paced world of 21st Century slang. Where you either keep up, or get left in the dust.
Luckily for you, we've taken the step of providing a guide as to what words you should be adding to your vocabulary, and the ones that need the boot.
A recent survey conducted by YouGov Galaxy and Facebook Messenger has revealed the most popular words among 13-19 year old's, and there's a few surprises in there!
So take note.
Here’s what is in and out today, according to the youth:
The top slang words at the moment:
Dude
K (Okay)
Salty (to be rude or angry)
Savage (to be bitter or crass)
Yaaaass (used to express enthusiastic support)
Basic (mainstream and trendy, in a dull way)
Throwing shade (insulting)
Shook (to be amazed, shocked, in disbelief)
Lit (something fun and exciting)
Terms you should START using:
peng (cool)
eets (short for ‘sweet’)
peak (when something is going really bad)
Terms you should STOP using:
LOL (laugh out loud)
Bae (another word for babe, referring to one’s partner)
Sup (an abbreviation of “what’s up?”)
Dabbing (a style of dance)
Can't say we disagree with that last one... We're probably all better off just pretending dabbing never existed in the first place.
Another interesting thing noted in the survey was the use (or lack there of) of capital letters when it comes to today's youth.
Apparently basic grammar is no longer cool either...
So there you have it, sprinkle a few of these into your next whatsApp message and you'll be 'eets.'
G2G!
