The HSE has confirmed there's no need.
There is no need to take a monthly break from the contraceptive pill.
The HSE say there's no medical reason why women can't just take the pill for the whole month and never have a bleed.
Women generally take the pill for three weeks of the month, followed by a break for a week which results in a period.
The myth is after an attempt by one of the creators of the pill to please the Catholic Church. The pill aims to prevent crisis pregnancies by using hormones to stop a woman from producing any eggs from her ovaries.
"If you're on continuous pills, be it for four months in a row or a year, there is no increased risk of cancer or clots in the legs and lungs" says Professor Ray O'Sullivan.
"Science supports this as well ...It's not just not having a period and the benefits of that. It is safe to do so, which is the key part here".
Women are being reminded that this news can vary depending on the type of medication and they should double-check with their doctor.
