A Donegal nightclub has removed a large "offensive" billboard following backlash in the community and online.

Libertys nightclub were behind the advertisement, which featured the back of a female golfer captioned with "Libertys. Your 19th hole for the summer".

The Irish Open is to be held in Ballyliffen Gold Club for the first time ever from July 4th, hosted by none other than Rory McIlroy's Rory Foundation.

The billboard was widely condemned, with Donegal senator Padraig Mac Lochlainn saying "This large billboard sign on the approach to my home town of Buncrana is just plain offensive to women.

And it is offensive to men who respect the women in their lives.

I have contacted Libertys management to attempt to report the outrage in our community at this billboard. They haven’t returned my call.

If it was shock value publicity they were seeking, then mission accomplished. They need to cop themselves on, show some respect for our community and take it down!"

One Facebook user commented on the Senator's Facebook post saying "A vile embarrassment for the town. This needs to come down ASAP."

According to Facebook, the billboard has been removed. Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has thanked the nightclub's management for " listening to your local community and respectfully taking down the billboard sign in Buncrana."

He went on to say "This is not a bit of a laugh any more. Society has changed.

All of us men need to step up and see that all women deserve respect, not just our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives or partners."
