The divorce referendum will happen alongside the local and European elections
An Irish referendum on divorce will happen in May.
Couples currently have to be separated for four years before they can divorce.
The referendum will take that reference out of the constitution, allowing politicians to reduce the waiting time.
The government say they'll hold the vote in May alongside the local and European elections.
The decision is after a Dáil bill by Fine Gael's Josepha Madigan proposing to reduce the mandatory separation period to two years.
Josepha Madigan and Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan will speak to media later this afternoon on the issue.
