There's no avoiding onions - the smelly, tear-inducing vegetable is a key ingredient in many of our favourite dishes.

But you don't have to put up with red, streaming eyes while making spag bol or curry anymore.

The sunion, the first tearless onion, is hitting shelves soon.

The sunion is 30 years in the making and was created through natural cross-breeding.

It doesn't release as much lachrymatory-factor synthase as standard onions when chopped into.

Lachrymatory-factor synthase is an enzyme that forms sulphuric acid when it comes into contact with the natural water in your eyes, causing your eyes to release tears to reduce the irritant.

This means the sunion also tastes sweeter and milder.

And they work!
