Dogs lovers know that there's nothing much better in this world than cuddling up with a pooch.

But it turns out that dogs can't stand one certain type of stroking and actually find it quite rude.

A canine expert in the UK has revealed that you should never pat a pooch on the head.

Speaking to The Mirror, Sarah Bartlett explained why:

"The wrong way to approach a dog is to walk up to them head on and just lean straight over them. It's quite a threatening gesture for them."

The qualified international dog training instructor described how to pet your furry friend:

"The best thing is to approach them from the side and then go down."

"Keep your own bubble and their bubble, and it's then the dog's choice whether they encroach into your bubble."

"I'm crouched down sideways and all I'm going to do is offer my hand out."

Sarah said if the dog sniffs your hand, you should then give them a little scratch under the chin or the ear.

They love that!
