Cockroaches could soon be in your kitchen - in fact, in your fridge!

The insect's milk is being hailed as the latest 'superfood'.

Scientists have found that cockroach milk - or post-natal fluid - boasts many nutritional benefits.

The critters secrete the fluid in the form of crystals to nourish their 50 or so hatchlings.

Researchers from the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in India claim humans could consume it too, and it's said to taste like cow's milk.

Study author Sanchari Banerjee told the Times of India:

"The crystals are like a complete food – they have proteins, fats and sugars. If you look into the protein sequences, they have all the essential amino acids."

In fact, a single crystal of the milk is estimated to contain more than three times the energy of an equivalent mass of dairy milk.

However, it doesn't look like cockroach milk will be available to buy anytime soon as it's cruel.

It would take thousands of cockroaches to make up even one glass of milk and the insects die in the fluid extraction process.

So, thankfully it won't be creeping up on restaurant menus or supermarket shelves!

Phew!
