Animal rights activists demand village of Wool change its name

In Dorset, England lies a 1,000 year old village named 'Wool'.

The small, sleepy town hasn't received much attention - until now.

The reason it's hitting headlines around the world is because of animal rights group, PETA.

PETA is trying to convince the village to change its name because they believe that it promotes "sheep cruelty".

However, the residents of Wool have brought to light that the name of the village has nothing to do with sheep - it comes from the Saxon word 'welle' which means a water spring.

But this hasn't stopped PETA.

A sheep getting its annual shave

The Telegraph reports that its director Elisa Allen has written to Wool Parish Council to request that they change the name to 'Vegan Wool' to "promote kindness to sheep".

She's also offered to give 2,000 cruelty-free woollen blankets to houses in the village if the agree to the change.

As PETA put the request in writing, the parish council is obliged to discuss it.

Councillor Cherry Brooks said: "It is ridiculous. A few people are quite offended, most find it amusing."

It comes as a pub in York changed its name from Shoulder of Mutton to Hemworth Inn earlier this week.

The bar made the decision in order to attract more vegans.
