What's the correct way to use the toilet?!

Do your business, wipe yourself clean with toilet paper, and flush - right?

Wrong!

Experts say toilet paper doesn't clean our bums properly and could cause worrying health problems.

Us Irish (as well as Brits, Aussies and Americans) are apparently lagging behind the rest of the world when it comes to toilet hygiene.

While you'll find bidets in most of Europe, the Middle East and Asia, we're relying solely on loo roll to get the job done, so to speak.

But now we're being warned that wiping alone could leave faeces behind, while excessive wiping with dry paper could cause anal fissures and urinary tract infections.

Ewww!

Rose George, author of The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters, says:

"Toilet paper moves shit, but it doesn't remove it. You wouldn't shower with a dry towel; why do you think that dry toilet paper cleans you?"

"I find it rather baffling that millions of people are walking around with dirty anuses while thinking they are clean."

We're being advised to use wet wipes (if you don't have a bidet) for a thorough clean and to protect our sensitive bits!
