JD Wetherspoon has quit social media.

The popular UK pub chain announced this morning that it's closing its Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.

It stayed true to its word and accounts for its head office and 900 pubs quickly disappeared.

Wetherspoons says the move is due to the "trolling" of MPs and ethnic and religious minorities.

Speaking to the BBC, chairman Tim Martin said the decision was also influenced by concerns regarding the "misuse of personal data" and "the addictive nature of social media".

Mr Martin thinks that people spend too much time on social media and struggle to control the compulsion.

He said he doesn't think shutting their social media accounts will affect business whatsoever.

Wetherspoons will continue to release news stories and information about forthcoming events on its website (jdwetherspoon.com) and in its printed magazine, Wetherspoon News.
