Married couples should be careful today as lawyers have labelled the 8th of January "Divorce Day" as the number of people seeking to end their marriage hits a peak.

Financial pressures and family tensions over Christmas are the main reasons for these troubled times according to legal firm Slater and Gordon.

A survey of 2,000 married adults found more than 37% said financial pressures were the biggest challenge to their marriage, 22% said most of their arguments centred on money, 25% said they stayed together because they were worried about their children and 24% were concerned about losing their home.

It also seems people cant hold off temptation as 27% of those surveyed admitted they had cheated but not told their partner, while 7% said they had carried the secret for more than 10 years. It doesn't look like matters are going to change for the new year. Nearly one in 10 (8%) said they were likely to sleep with someone other than their partner in 2018.

It will come as no surprise with these figures that the number of divorces are on the rise. The latest statistics show that 42% of marriages now end in divorce, with the average marriage now lasting 12 years.

As new years resolutions are still a hot topic, it might be worth while for married couples to spend more time with their loved one as their number one goal for 2018.
