The world's first virtual newsreader has started broadcasting the news to Chinese viewers.

China's state news agency has unveiled the news anchor, a realistic-looking man who wear a sharp suit.

Xinhua News claims the AI presenter "can read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor".

The agency said the English-speaking anchor "can work 24 hours a day, reducing news production costs and improving efficiency".

A second newsreader has been developed to read headlines in Chinese. Both have been based on real Xinhua News presenters.

However, Michael Wooldridge, professor of computer science at the University of Oxford, isn't a fan.

He told the BBC that the AI anchor is "quite difficult to watch for more than a few minutes":

"It’s very flat, very single-paced, it’s not got rhythm, pace or emphasis."
