A vet charity in the UK is looking for overweight pets to take part in a slimming competition.

The PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) has launched its annual Pet Fit Club to help our furry friends fight the flab.

Up to 15 pets from across the UK will be chosen to participate in the contest.

The fat cats, diet-dodging dogs and rotund rabbits are placed on a strict six-month diet and exercise programme, individually tailored to their needs and overseen by vets and nurses at their local PDSA Pet Hospital.

Alfie the Jack Russell, who has a love for steak sandwiches, is one of the contenders, along with Elvis the cat who's almost 10kg from constantly snacking.

Now in its 13th year, Pet Fit Club has helped 124 overweight and obese pets lose 450kg (71 stone).

Last year’s winner was Alfie the Beagle who managed to shed 34% of his body weight.
