Svalbard has a chilling secret.

There's an island off the coast of Norway where you're not allowed to die.

The SV Antigua on the western coast of Svalbard (Spitsbergen) in September 2017.

Dying has been banned in Svalbard since 1950 when it was discovered that bodies in the local graveyards were not decomposing because of the arctic temperatures.

The Sun reports that residents cannot be buried on the island due to the fear of disease spreading.

The low temperatures mean killer viruses remain live in dead bodies.

In fact, scientists recently tested corpses buried on Svalbard who succumbed to the 1917 influenza virus and retrieved live samples of the virus.

Residents who are unwell or old are flown off the island to the mainland city of Oslo, which is thousands of miles away, to die.

There is no old people's home on Svalbard or hospital. Expectant mums are flown to the mainland to give birth - so, no one is born there either!
