The data claims there is a link between income and 'effort-based attractiveness'

A study compiled by Sociologists Jaclyn Wong and Andrew Penner has found that women are paid significantly more money if they are well-groomed in the workplace.

The research, called Gender and the returns to attractiveness collected data from more than 14,000 employees, and found there is a link between income and effort-based attractiveness.

The findings partially drew on older studies which showed attractive men and women earn 20 per cent more than less conventionally attractive colleagues.

But, this time, researchers found that perceived attractiveness of women, unlike men, was based entirely on how well-groomed she was - with lipstick, blow-dry and pedicure's seemingly the most important factors.

While we'd like to think women wouldn't be financially penalised for not bothering to sculpt their eyebrows, it is a fairly superficial world we live in!

Some of the main highlights of the study included:

  • Physically attractive individuals have higher income than average individuals
  • This relationship is reduced when controlling for grooming
  • Surprisingly, the attractiveness premium does not vary by gender
  • Grooming explains all the attractiveness premia for women, but only half for men
