Students unknowingly consumed the "sandy" biscuits.

A high school student allegedly put her grandad's cremated ashes into cookies and served them to her classmates.

Police in California are investigating reports that the teen and a friend baked the biscuits and shared them with at least nine students at their school near Sacramento.

One of the Da Vinci Charter Academy students spoke to local TV station KCRA.

Andy Knox said:

"She had mentioned her grandpa's ashes before. I didn't believe her until she pulled out the urn. And I was really, I was kind of horrified."

"If you ever ate sand as a kid, you know, you can kind of feel it crunching in between your teeth. So, there was a little tiny bit of that."

However, police say the girl and her friend are unlikely to be charged.

Speaking to the Sacramento Bee, Davis Police spokesperson Lieutenant Paul Doroshov said he was unaware as to whether baking human remains into food could be considered a crime, noting that it would "probably take some legal debate to figure out":

"As far as we know, no one's suffered any ill effects physically. There could be some emotional issues experienced, but no one got sick from this, physically."

Davis Joint Unified School District issued a statement, saying the incident has been "particularly challenging":

"Those who were involved are remorseful and this is now a personal family matter and we want to respect the privacy of the families involved."
