An Post said it won't rule out replacing some rural post offices with mobile ones.
It comes after the postal service company announced that it's closing 159 post offices in villages and townlands nationwide.
Last year, a report from the Post Office Hub Working Group suggested the idea of a mobile post office that would travel around rural communities in a van.
An Post said it's not sure how suitable the recommendation would be in an Irish context, but mobile post offices may be part of its operation in the future.
It said closures are only taking place in areas with a population under 500 people and within 15km of the nearest alternative outlet.
