There could soon be nuns on the run at the Olympics.

The Vatican has launched an official athletics team made up of 62 members of the clergy, religious orders and Swiss guards.

The team, "Athletica Vaticana", trains in navy uniforms bearing the Holy See’s crossed keys seal.

It's hoped they'll one day compete in international sporting competitions.

Speaking to the Guardian, team president, Monsignor Melchor Jose Sánchez de Toca y Alameda, said:

"The dream that we have often had is to see the Holy See flag among the delegations at the opening of the Olympic Games."

Their first outing is on January 20th when they'll compete in the 10km Corsa di Miguel in Rome.
