And the snow could begin falling as early as tonight.

Met Eireann has warned the country to brace for what will most likely be the coldest week of winter so far.

The national forecaster has issued a nationwide status yellow warning for ice and snow, valid from Tomorrow morning (Tuesday) at 6am until Saturday Feburary 2nd at 6pm.

Thursday is expected to see the heaviest snow fall, the warning on the forecaster's website states: "Very cold this week with scattered wintry showers, frequent across the southwest, west and north. Some accumulations of snow are expected. There will be widespread frost at night with icy stretches on untreated surfaces.

"There is the possibility of a more significant spell of sleet/snow on Thursday.''

Meanwhile Tuesday night will bring bitterly cold conditions, with a low of -3 to +1 degrees, plus falls of sleet and snow away from coastal counties.

Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly says it remains unclear how much snow we can expect on Thursday.

He tweeted: "There is a risk of some heavy snowfall on Thursday on high ground but the details this far out are far from clear. I’ll have more details on that latest charts this evening."

He added: "The @metoffice charts for that low system on Thursday that could bring some heavy snow, high ground mainly at risk with a sleety mix more likely on lower areas but this far out the details can change and very hard to call these type of setups."

The bottom line, stay warm people!
