The update suggests 'significant' snow fall may happen sooner than first thought.
As of 6am this morning a Met Éireann status yellow snow and ice warning came into effect for the entire country, valid until Saturday February 2nd.
And already, the national forecaster has issued a further update.
While it was previously thought that Thursday would see the most snowfall this week, there is now the chance for 'significant accumulations are possible this evening and overnight [Tuesday]', says Met Éireann.
The update on the forecaster's website reads:
''Update: Very cold this week with showers of hail, sleet and snow, frequent across the southwest, west and north, where some significant accumulations are possible this evening and overnight.
''There will be widespread frost with icy stretches on untreated surfaces.
''There is the potential for further significant snowfall in places on Thursday.''
