It's now going to be an offence to knowingly allow an unaccompanied learner driver or unlicensed person to drive your car.

The new law comes into effect from tomorrow.

After losing his wife and daughter in a crash caused by a learner driver, Noel Clancy called on the Transport Minister for restrictions on car owners who allow learners to drive their car unaccompanied.

Under The Clancy Amendment to the Road Traffic Act, named in memory of Geraldine and Louise, it will now be an offence to knowingly allow an unaccompanied learner driver or unlicensed person to drive your car.

Transport Minister Shane Ross says he hopes the legislation will change the driving culture in Ireland.

The Clancy amendment will come into effect from midnight tonight.
