FIFA has threatened sanctions for Mexico over the issue
It’s the Spanish word for a male prostitute...
And it could potentially tarnish Mexico’s World Cup campaign if fans chant at their next game.
In the midst of Mexico's stunning 1-0 upset of reigning World Cup Champions Germany, a slur was heard chanted at Germany players, including Goal Keeper Manuel Neuer as he took a goal kick.
Beginning with a soft ''Ehhhhhh'' the chant gradually builds and ends with a flurry of the work ''PUTO,'' Spanish for Male prostitute.

Governing body FIFA has labelled the slur in question “insulting,” and has opened disciplinary proceedings after the anti-gay chant was heard during El Tri’s victory over Germany on Sunday.
Mexico’s federation has in the past appealed to fans to refrain from blurting out the slur and the effort was largely successful at last year’s Confederations Cup in Russia.
And given FIFA’s new ‘three-step’ anti-discrimination process for dealing with bigotry from stands allows officials to stop, suspend or abandon games, the Mexican association has gone as far as running an educational campaign asking fans to stop using the word.
In a Twitter post, the association wrote: “In Russia, avoid being detained having your Fan ID taken away. Remember that you represent the best fan base in the world,” read the tweet.
It included a photo with words translating to “DO NOT SCREAM ‘PUTO.’”
En Rusia, evita que te retiren tu FAN ID o ser detenido. ✋?

Will the Mexican fans heed the warning? That remains to be seen when they clash with South Korea on Saturday!
