Gardaí recommend spending up to 20 per cent of the cost of a bike on two locks.

Over 14,000 bicycles worth €2 million have been stolen over the past two years, according to the latest Garda statistics.

Bike theft was up 7.5 per cent last year and is expected to rise again in 2018.

Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway accounted for 83 per cent of all bicycle theft.

The average cost of a bike stolen is over €500 and the most common time for it to be taken is between 8am and 5pm on a Friday.
