Ah here!
A dentist is urging us to pay special attention to our mouths this summer because the high temperatures can lead to bad breath.
Speaking to the Metro, halitosis expert Dr Harold Katz said a combination of dehydration, hay fever medications and sugary ice cream can make your breath smell terrible.
That's all we need!
Dr Katz said when your mouth is dry, acids aren't neutralised and dead cells gather on your tongue, gums and cheeks. When those dead cells start to decompose, they cause bad breath.
To avoid dry mouth, take regular sips of water throughout the day.
Our fave summer treats such such as ice cream and ice-cold fizzy drinks are also a big no-no for fresh breath, according to Dr Katz:
"The anaerobic bacteria in your mouth love sugar and these bacteria are responsible for releasing volatile compounds that cause halitosis. Sugary foods can also lead to the build-up of dental plaque on the teeth, which will leave you with cavities, tooth decay or other oral health ailments."
"That ice cold alcoholic beverage to accompany will only add to the problem. Not only is alcohol dehydrating, it is also full of sugar that is detrimental to your teeth and gums."
But we don't have to forgo all the fun this summer.
Dr Katz advises to follow up sugary foods and drink with a tooth brush, or some gum that doesn’t contain aspartame or artificial flavours and colours.
