Some shops across the country have already started to stock cigarettes with the new plain packaging.

Under new laws, all cigarettes and tobacco products will have to be sold in standardised packaging from September.

The Department of Health has released a photo of what the plain packaging looks like.

In accordance with the Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Act 2015, the familiar colours and logos of brands are gone and have been replaced with graphic photos of illnesses and diseases people develop as a result of smoking.

The aim of the packaging is to decrease the appeal of tobacco products. Studies have found that packaging plays an important role in encouraging young people to try cigarettes.

What do you think? It's a pretty nasty image! Do you think plain packaging will help smokers quit and prevent young people from starting to smoke?
