Cara O'Doherty at the Dublin International Film Festival
Winter well and truly came to Dublin on Tuesday Night as Nikolaj Coster-Waldau attended the Audi Dublin International Film Festival. The Game of Thrones actor was there to promote his latest film, 3 Things.
Before his arrival, the red carpet was awash with jokes about how a Lannister was bringing snow.
When it came to references to the Beast from the East, Coster-Waldau, could not help but tease the Irish about our inability to cope with the impending blizzard conditions. The Danish actor pointed out that this was just an average day in Denmark’s winter.
Game of Thrones is entering its eighth and final season. When Coster-Waldau was asked if he would have any interest in starring in Nightflyers, an adaption of a George R.R. Martin novella which is filming in the new Troy Studios in Limerick, his answer was a resounding no “I am going to wait a little before I jump into a long-running series, if ever.” He was quick to mention how much he has enjoyed the experience of making Game of Thrones, both as an actor and due to the many friends, he has made. He admits 10 years on any project is a long time.
His festival film, 3 Things, revolves around a criminal who has agreed to testify against his partners in crime in exchange for thee specific things. The actor is glad for the opportunity to be able to make small films around his Game of Thrones schedule “it was great to be able to do this. It was shot in just 15 days, its set in one location and it’s all about the dialogue. It’s the complete opposite of Game of Thrones.”
Asked about his glee when Denmark dramatically beat Ireland to the get to the World Cup, Coster-Waldau had this to say “I lost a bet about this and I promised that when I go to Moscow for the World Cup I will wear an Irish shirt so you will be represented.” We will hold you to that, Nikolaj!
